[16:10:37] <void09> blah got a pentium 233 mmx laptop to play around with 32bit arch, but there's no floppy, no cdrom. an usb1 port but i doubt that is bootable
[16:11:18] <void09> I guess i should pull the disk out and try to install on it on another computer :-?
[16:17:41] <T`aZ> that would be the easiest yes
[16:28:12] <bill-auger> IMHO adding a CD player would be easiest - you should be able to find an IDE CD player for it cheap or free - in that case, you would not need the HD to work at all - simply boot the LiveISO and "play around"
[16:30:17] <void09> how would i pull an idea cable out ? leave the case open ?
[16:30:35] <void09> ah no, I want a persisten installation, definetely
[16:30:38] <bill-auger> b/c it is quite likely that the 30 yr old HD does not work anymore
[16:30:44] <void09> definitely*
[16:31:09] <void09> it works, it has win98 installed on it. Maybe I could put something else instead, via the PATA cable.
[16:31:18] <bill-auger> but a 30 yr old CD player probably does still work
[16:31:34] <void09> i have a pata to sata adapter, but I think it need one of those floppy style power connectors to work
[16:33:24] <void09> thing is, the pentium mmx is "p5" architecture, which would be arch i486, since there's no i586
[16:33:34] <void09> it won't be able to use the mmx on it :\
[16:33:48] <void09> maybe gentoo linux lol
[16:34:11] <void09> any i586 + mmx distros ?
[16:34:17] <void09> i guess that's an unlikley combo
[16:45:29] <bill-auger> those CPUs are named "pentium pro" - there is no 233 MHz model i my memory though - are you sure that is not a K6-2 or pentium2 ?
[16:59:24] <bill-auger> as i remember, "pentium pro" was short-lived, marketed mainly as a CPU replacement upgrade; because pentium2 CPUs came out soon afterward - there is no 233 MHz model in my memory though - are you sure that is not a K6-2 or pentium2 ?
[16:59:39] <void09> https://www.cpu-world.com
[16:59:48] <void09> there's no pro, pentiu mmx went up to 266mhz i think
[17:00:23] <void09> https://thandor.net
[17:00:25] <phrik> Title: thandor.net - Pentium MMX 266 (at thandor.net)
[17:06:32] <bill-auger> ok wikipedia sorted them out for my curiosity
[17:06:32] <bill-auger> > (pentium 2) "combined the P6 microarchitecture seen on the Pentium Pro with the MMX instruction set of the Pentium MMX"
[18:57:17] Xe_ is now known as Xe
